Checkpoint #12

Mid-Research Assessment
It's like a more structured Journal Log entry

We're about halfway done, so here's a place to stop and take stock of where you are with your research.

You'll answer a series of prompts-- some briefly, some in paragraph-depth-- about your progress on your project.

You'll do this as an assignment in Google Classroom.

Prompts:

  • Write a one sentence description of the subject of your research paper.
  • How many sources have you found?
  • How many sources have you read and taken notes on?
  • Which databases have you taken material from?
  • Explain how your ideas about your paper have changed now that you have done some research: are there new questions you are trying to answer? are there old questions that you no longer planning to write about? has your subject changed in any major ways?
  • Skim through your notes (especially the topic categories) and write a rough outline of your paper as you now imagine it: name the main topics that your paper will break down into and tell a little about what each topic means. Your list can include topics that you haven’t covered in your notes yet, but which you want to include in your research.
  • In a paragraph, teach me something about one aspect of your research that you have already learned a lot about and that interests you.
  • In a paragraph, teach me something about the opposing viewpoints that you have researched for your paper.
  • Write a list of the parts of your subject you still need to learn more about. Define them as clearly as you can, so that you can come up with search terms that might help you find the new information that you need.
  • Explain your current plan for the interview.
